JSC Embamunaigas has optimised costs through horizontal drilling

The horizontal drilling method introduced at Embamunaigas JSC (hereinafter EMG or the Company) in 2019 demonstrates its effectiveness and yields positive results.

To date, 16 of the 34 fields under development at Embamunaigas JSC are covered by horizontal drilling. Between 2019 and 2022, 55 horizontal wells have been drilled and commissioned.

The purpose of drilling horizontal wells is to increase the efficiency of residual recoverable oil reserves by increasing the drainage area of the reservoir compared to vertical wells, and to increase the ultimate oil recovery factor.

The new technology has made it possible to bring hard-to-recover oil reserves into development and optimise the number of wells drilled per year.

-The introduction and replication of the horizontal well drilling project not only made it possible to fulfil the annual oil production plan, given the current state of field development, when drilling vertical wells becomes less efficient for geological reasons, but also to significantly optimise costs per tonne of oil produced by 45%," said Deputy General Director for Geology and Development of Embamunaigas JSC, Kairat Kozov.

In addition, reducing the total number of wells commissioned reduces emissions into the environment and will reduce well abandonment costs in the future.

Thus, in order to "revitalise" late-stage fields, JSC Embamunaigas, which will celebrate its centenary in 2022, is using modern approaches and technology in its oil production activities.
