Horizontal drilling is being introduced at Emba
Embamunaigas JSC (hereinafter referred to as EMG or the Company), most of whose fields are at a late stage of development, uses modern approaches and technologies to develop residual oil reserves, which allows to involve more complex geological objects in the development. One of these technologies is drilling horizontal wells, which demonstrates higher efficiency in comparison with vertical wells. As part of this activity, 5 horizontal wells were drilled in EMG in 2019, 4 of them are in operation and provide good oil flow rates, and 1 is under testing.
- Each horizontal well was laid for certain geological goals that were successfully achieved by our specialists, despite on the high risks and uncertainties. As a result of the work carried out, it was found that the productivity coefficient of a horizontal well is several times higher than a vertical well. EMG plans to drill horizontal wells on high-viscosity layers that lie at a depth of up to 300 m. in the future and annually increase the share of horizontal wells in production drilling , - said the Chairman of the Board of EMG Anuar ZHAKSYBEKOV.
The increase in production and development of hydrocarbon reserves as a result of drilling horizontal wells is achieved due to a significant rise the opening of the effective oil-saturated thickness, which in turn leads to a growth in the well productivity coefficient and the area of drainage of the reservoir. According to the statistics of operational drilling in Russia, the number of horizontal wells is growing every year, as well as their share in relation to other wells. Currently, various oil companies are engaged in drilling horizontal wells in Kazakhstan. However, the share of horizontal drilling in relation to vertical drilling remains insignificant.
